- Ejin River
The Ejin River (Chinese: 额济纳河 "Ejina-he", Mongolian: "Etsin-gol, Edzin-gol"), also known as the Heihe River (黑河, lit. "black river"), is a major river system that originates on the northern
Gansu side of theQilian Shan mountains. A total of 800 km long, the river has two major branches: the western branch flows fromZhangye through Jiuyuguan andJiuquan , while the eastern branch flows throughGanzhou . The two branches merge nearGaotai and flow north into theInner Mongolia Autonomous Region , where the river terminates in the endorheicEjin Basin in theGobi Desert .The former
Tangut capital ofKhara-Khoto , now deserted, lies near the lower end of the river. According to legend, the city was abandoned after Ming forces diverted the river away from the city in1372 .European explorers to visit the area includePyotr Kuzmich Kozlov (1907–1909) andJohn DeFrancis (1935).The river area has been suffering from acute
desertification . Ground water levels have dropped by as much as 5 meters since the 1940s, while forest coverage near the river shrunk by 1924 km² between 1958 and 1994 and theJuyanhai Lake , once 1200 km²., has dried up entirely.
