Mary McCarthy (1951-) is an Irish novelist from Glasnevin in Dublin.

Works

McCarthy is the author of four novels, Remember Me, And No Bird Sang, Crescendo, and Shame the Devil with Poolbeg Press. She has sold in total almost 100,000 copies, and has been translated into over 5 languages including French and German. Her work has been praised by Time, ^[1]

Currently, McCarthy is working on her fifth novel.

Background and inspiration

McCarthy was part of the growth in contemporary women's Irish fiction which emerged in the 1990s. Other notable authors of this movement include Patricia Scanlan, Maeve Binchy and Cathy Kelly. McCarthy's books were regarded as 'thinking fiction' within the industry, and were a marked departure from the simultaneously flourishing genre of holiday novels, also known as "chick lit".

All of her work has received favourable reviews from television programmes and book reviews in the Irish Daily Star, The Irish Times and The Irish Independent newspapers. She appeared on TV3 in Ireland as well as other mainstream Irish radio stations.

Until 2006, McCarthy taught English and French at St. Mary's Holy Faith Convent, a Catholic Secondary School for Girls. The school is situated in Glasnevin, directly across the street from where she currently lives. McCarthy herself attended this very same school when she was a teenager. Among students and staff alike, McCarthy was said to have been very popular.
