Riverland region ofSouth Australia . It was gazetted in 1921 as the town in a soldier settlement area afterWorld War I and was named afterAdmiral Glossop , who had been in charge of the HMAS|Sydney|1912|6 when it sank the SMS|Emden|1906|6 in 1914.Local Area and Surrounds
Glossop has a population of around 500.
Berri Estates , a largewinery originally owned by a localco-operative but now owned byConstellation Brands , is located near the centre of Glossop. It is the home of [http://www.rcs.sa.edu.au Riverland Christian School] , Glossop Primary School andGlossop High School , one of the region's four high schools (the others being atLoxton ,Waikerie andRenmark ).Although one of the smaller towns of South Australia's Riverland region, Glossop is the home of a gallery of Australian
Aboriginal art , a small deli (in the Australian sense of the word), two petrol stations, and some hardware shops. It is on the OldSturt Highway , between the more major towns of Barmera and Berri. Glossop also has a motel outside which is situated Captain Glossop's Anchor.Council Area
Glossop is in the
Berri Barmera Council local government area, the state electorate of Chaffey and the federaldivision of Barker .Glossop is one of the few Riverland towns that do not share frontage with the
Murray River . Other towns of this nature include Monash and Yamba, the gateway to the Riverland from the Victorian border.
