- Tooting Junction station
Tooting Junction station was a
railway station inTooting on the 'Merton Branch' of theTooting, Merton and Wimbledon Railway . It was opened in1868 . It also served the main line from Wimbledon intoCentral London .It was replaced in
1894 by the currentTooting railway station slightly to the East, principally because it was too small to handle the volume of traffic. It largely ceased to have any purpose following the closure of the Merton Branch in1929 , althrough goods trains continued to use the nearby yard. The station building survived for more than a century after the last passengers had used it, and was used as a private dwelling, but in 2004 was demolished, and new houses built on the site. Fragments of the platforms remain, and the original footbridge has been converted to pedestrian use.
