A native of Bilyarsk, Arbuzov studied in the Kazan University under Alexander Mikhaylovich Zaytsev. [cite journal | author = Lewis, D.E. | title = The University of Kazan: Provincial Cradle of Russian Organic Chemistry. Part II: Aleksandr Zaitsev and His Students | journal = The Journal of Chemical Education | year = 1994 | volume = 71 | pages = 91 – 95] He graduated in 1900 and became professor at the same university in 1911. After World War II he was put in charge of the Soviet Institute of Organic Chemistry.
