Houghton and Washington East is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

Boundaries

Houghton and Washington East contains much of the City of Sunderland. The seat contains the eastern half of the 'new town' of Washington, and the older communities of Houghton-le-Spring, Hetton-le-Hole, Penshaw, Shiney Row, Ryhope and Herrington.

Boundary review

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Tyne and Wear, Sunderland South is to be merged with elements of the existing Houghton and Washington East seat to create a new constituency called Houghton and Sunderland South.

Houghton and Washington East will therefore be abolished at the next General Election.
