Autoignition=Ionomycin is an
ionophore produced by thebacterium "Streptomyces conglobatus " [See [http://www.fermentek.co.il/ionomycin_CA_salt.htm Ionomycin Calcium salt] fromFermentek , manufacturer's product page for ionomycin] . It is used in research to raise the intracellular level ofcalcium (Ca2+) and as a research tool to understand Ca2+ transport across biological membranes.It is also used to stimulate the intracellular production of thecytokines interferon ,perforin ,IL-2 , andIL-4 usually in conjunction with PMA. These cytokines are important in theinflammatory response .Commercially, Ionomycin can be obtained as a free acid, or as a Ca2+ salt.
