Plot summary
In this episode, Detectives Goren and Eames investigate the murder of a pharmaceutical company executive, Clayton Sherwood, found chopped in half and stuffed in his suitcase to be shipped back to Bangkok.
Key findings:
1) Due to a manufacturing mishap in 2001, about $15 million of human plasma-derived Factor VIII clotting factor were not cleared of HIV. Those vials should have been destroyed after the senior corporate office was notified and had approved of their destruction. Now in 2004, those tainted vials were being shipped to Thailand where there was an HIV epidemic which was being used as a convenient cover for the HIV-tainted Factor VIII. After the manufacturing mishap, Clarendon Pharmaceuticals stopped selling human-derived clotting factor (white labelled vials) and started selling synthetic clotting factor (green labelled vials). The tainted vials being sold in 2004 in Thailand were labelled with green labels—old HIV-tainted human-derived Factor VIII was being sold as synthetic Factor VIII!
1) Eric Dunlow is actually an impostor, Brian, who has assumed the identity of an Eric Dunlow who was a college yachtsman that had overdosed on MDMA and remains in a semi-vegetative state. The impostor Eric Dunlow is presently employed at Clarendon Pharmaceuticals as Gordon Buchanan's administrative secretary. This impostor was not going to let the corrupt and murderous blackmailers take advantage of him. Instead he turns the tables on them!
2) Bernard Mailer, Steve Johannsen, Clayton Sherwood are involved in the HIV-tainted Factor VIII scandal, deception, coverup. They discovered that Eric Dunlow is an impostor and decided to blackmail him in order to get him to plant false information into Gordon Buchanan's (their boss) computer.
3) Clayton Sherwood is Head of Sales for Southeast Asia for Clarendon Pharmaceuticals. He blackmailed Eric Dunlow to get Eric to plant false information into Gordon Buchanan's computer that would falsely implicate Gordon Buchanan in the tainted Factor VIII scandal.
4) Gordon Buchanan is the Head of Blood Products division of Clarendon Pharmaceuticals. He is openly gay, has a strong ethics code, and is a yachtsman. He was unaware of the tainted Factor VIII vials until Det. Goren informed him that the vials were tainted with HIV.
5) Dr. Pirapan was the Bangkok hemophilia specialist treating an 8 year old with the disease who became infected with HIV. Pirapan suspected that the Factor VIII administered to the boy was the source of the HIV infection and informed the drug distributor (who subsequently informed Clayton Sherwood).
