Celestial bronze

Celestial bronze

Celestial bronze is a fictional material used by demigods and gods in the series Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

The Hunters are known to have used it. Annabeth and Percy use it also. In Percy's case, it is a sword named Anaklusmos (Riptide). Demigods and Gods favor celestial bronze because weapons made from it are known to wound immortals, monsters and any creature from the underworld, but not mortals. Celestial bronze will pass through mortals like an illusion. It is said that they simply are not important enough for the it to kill. Demigods can be killed by either celestial or normal weapons. They are twice as vulnerable. [Riordan, Rick: "The Lightning Thief", pages 153-154. Miramax Books, 2005.]

Weapons of Celestial Bronze

Anaklusmos was made from celestial bronze. It is originally a ballpoint pen, but when it is uncapped, it "grows" to form a "shimmering bronze sword with a double-edged blade, a leather-wrapped grip, and a flat hilt riveted with gold studs." Percy said that it was the first weapon to have felt balanced in his hand. It was forged by the Cyclopes, tempered in the heart of Mount Etna, and cooled in the river Lethe. Annabeth uses a short dagger made of celestial bronze, which she often keeps in one sleeve. Luke however, uses a sword called 'Backbiter', which is half bronze and half steel - for immortals and mortals. It is also notable that Nico di Angelo(son of Hades) is the only half-blood that does not use a celestial bronze weapon. Instead he wields a sword that is made out of Stygian iron (iron that was made from the river styx). Because it was made from the waters that separate the living and the dead it has the power to harm both of them and absorb their soul into it.
