Perseus "Percy" Jackson is the protagonist in Rick Riordan's fantasy series, "Percy Jackson & The Olympians". He serves as the narrator, as well as the story's hero.

    Character's background

Percy has been shown to be smart, often facing dangers and going into fights, to help prove himself. He often puts others before himself (such as Annabeth, Grover, his mother Sally, Thalia and even people he doesn’t like). He has a strong sense of right and wrong and will often oppose evil. Throughout the series Percy is also shown to have a sense of humor, making witty comments, in dialogue and in the narration. Percy is very fond of Coca-Cola (especially out of a can) and blue colored food (because his mom often got it for him).

His two best friends are Annabeth and Grover. In "The Sea of Monsters" Percy meets his brother Tyson (who is a baby Cyclops) and they both become friends. In "The Titan's Curse", Percy's newest friend is Thalia, whom he has also become close with. Ironically to their friendship, their personalities are so similar they tend to argue and fight a lot, but they still manage to stay best friends.

His birthday is in August, as shown in The Battle of the Labyrinth.

He first meets his friend Grover through the school they attended in the sixth grade, Yancy Academy in New York. Grover is the first satyr to realize that Percy is a demigod, and therefore, he is required to bring him to Camp Half-Blood. However, before he reaches the camp, they must face several obstacles.

Annabeth eventually becomes one of Percy's good friends. In the beginning, it seemed as though she disliked him, yet after they went on his first quest together in The Lightning Thief, that changed. They formed a strong bond over the next year as they worked together to save Grover and Camp Half-Blood and help out Clarisse in The Sea of Monsters. When Annabeth was lost in The Titan's Curse, at first Percy could think of nothing else but saving her. Upon meeting Aphrodite, he realized that his feelings for Annabeth were more than friendly. Athena seemed to sense it too and told him during the council at the end of the book that she did not approve of their friendship. In The Battle of the Labyrinth Percy has many girl issues- Rachel, Calypso, and Annabeth. Percy and Annabeth seem to have revealed their feelings for each other due to both of their jealous actions toward Rachel and Luke, their canceled "date", and the kiss they shared inside of Mount St. Helens.

Percy has three known direct family members. The first is Poseidon, who is his father and god of the seas. Percy has a great wish to make his father feel fond of him, but he often feels forgotten and disliked by his father. In The Battle of the Labyrinth, it is revealed that Percy is Poseidon's favorite son.

His second relation is Sally Jackson, his mother. It is shown that he loves her very much and grieves for quite a while when he believes her dead. His mother cares for him dearly, often giving him half-truths to try to protect and save him. She enjoys making blue things for Percy. Her boyfriend, as of The Battle of the Labyrinth, is Paul Blofis (who, at the end of Book 4, asks Percy for permission to marry Sally).

His third direct relation is his half brother Tyson, a Cyclops. He is first introduced as a clingy friend, but then turns out to be a monster. In the beginning of "The Sea of Monsters", Percy is embarrassed by him and tries to hide the fact that he is related to him; however, he becomes very sad when he discovers that Tyson appears to have died. By the end of the second book, Percy has fully accepted him, and is proud to call him "brother".

Percy is related to all the gods and half-bloods, who are cousins twice removed with other half bloods, excluding children of Hades, Demeter, and Zeus, of which he is a first cousin. If the account of Hesiod that Aphrodite came out of the sea foam after the castration of Ouranos is to be accepted, he would be only distantly related to Aphrodite. However, Pseudo-Apollodorus claims she is the daughter of Zeus by Dione, in which case Percy would be Aphrodite's cousin.

Percy is also related to Thalia, who is his cousin, daughter of Zeus, and to Nico and Bianca di Angelo, the children of Hades.

Throughout the series Percy is often blamed for things in the mortal world which have been caused by magical creatures, gods and other demigods. In the first book of the series, Percy is accused of kidnapping his mother. He and his friends, Annabeth and Grover, then become public enemies and are considered terrorists due to accidentally blowing up a bus and blow-torching the St. Louis Arch.

In "The Sea of Monsters", he also gets in trouble when he, Tyson, and Annabeth supposedly blow up a school gym. They once again escape punishment (the cover story being that a furnace exploded). However, Percy is expelled from his school because he has ‘un-groovy karma that disrupted the school's educational aura’. In The Titans Curse, it is also revealed that Percy's "fatal flaw" is personal loyalty: he is too loyal to his family and friends.

In "The Battle of the Labyrinth" Percy seems to reveal his feelings for Annabeth. When they part ways in Mt. St. Helens, Annabeth kisses him for luck. He unleashes his full powers in the volcano and causes an eruption. He lands on Ogygia, a paradise, and a girl named Calypso meets him and cares for him while he is hurt. She tells him she is cursed on the island alone as punishment for siding with the Titans in the first war. She also says that the Fates every so often send her a hero, but one that cannot stay; in this case she falls for him. Percy has to leave and promises to visit her, but Calypso says that no one ever finds Ogygia twice, and that once he leaves he can never come back, and that she'll be alone again. She gives him a clipping of a moonlace and asks him to plant a garden in Manhattan for her and never to forget her. Calypso kisses him on the forehead goodbye. When he is back home he plants the baby moonlace for Calypso. When he gets home (two weeks later), the camp is burning his burial shroud, and Annabeth, eyes puffy from crying, is saying, "He was probably the bravest friend I've ever had. He . . ." then notices him, and says, "He's right there!" The story goes on with Annabeth somehow being angry at Percy, and they resume the quest.

    Powers/Abilities

    * Percy has ADHD, which makes half-bloods more aware in battles.
    * Percy is dyslexic, since his brain is hard-wired for Ancient Greek.
    * Percy has control over water (and bubbles in water), and he is able to manipulate it to his will.
    * Percy is given more energy and strength and is healed when out at sea or in water.
    * Percy is able to breathe underwater.
    * Percy can manipulate ships with his mind in order to make them sail.
    * While at sea, Percy has perfect bearings.
    * Percy can communicate with equestrian animals (horses, zebras, etc.), as his father created them out of sea foam.
    * Percy can sense where objects are underwater, as well as the ocean's warm and cold currents.
    * Since Tyson is his half-brother, he can communicate with him underwater.
    * Percy has a psychic connection with Grover called an empathy link.
    * Percy is an excellent swordsman.
    * When Percy touches objects underwater, they become dry.
    * Percy knows the exact cordinate location, when he is in or sailing on water.
    * Percy can withstand great pressures underwater.
    * When Percy is underwater, he stays dry, unless he doesn't want to be dry.
    * The water cushions Percy if he falls from a high altitude.
    * Percy takes a long time to burn, including against lava.
    * Percy can make water appear from nothing, though it takes much energy to do so.
    * Percy also appears to possess more power than any living half-blood (excluding Thalia and Nico di Angelo); when he was attacked by the telekhines in Hephaestus' forge he was in such danger that his powers acted on instinct and unleashed a tsunami burst that was powerful enough to kill the telekhines, destroy the forge, and awaken the imprisoned Typhon.

    Fatal Flaw

It is said by Athena that Percy's fatal flaw is personal loyalty. He will sacrifice anything to save his friends and loved ones.

    Relationship with Olympians

    * Poseidon: Percy is on good terms with Poseidon mainly because he is the sea god's son. In "The Battle of the Labyrinth", Poseidon says that Percy is his favorite son.
    * Zeus: Zeus currently has mixed feelings about Percy because he is upset about his birth as a demigod child of the big three but Percy save his lightning bolt which was a tall order. Zeus voted to let Percy live at the Winter Soltice in the Titan's curse though this may have been because his daughter's fate was involved as well(Since Thalia had become a hunter so it's possible that it wouldn't have mattered).
    * Hades: Hades had mixed feelings about Percy; Percy accused him of stealing Zeus' master bolt when it was, in fact, Luke that stole the master bolt, but he also returned Hades' Helm of Darkness, which makes him invisible, and cleared his name.
    * Ares: Percy is on Ares' bad side because of insults and injuries, among other things.
    * Athena: Athena has mixed feelings about Percy. She disapproves of his friendship with Annabeth since she and Poseidon are something of rivals, but he hasn't done anything against her directly. In "The Titan's Curse", she may have helped guide him at the Hoover Dam.
    * Hera: Percy got on Hera's bad side near the end of "The Battle of the Labyrinth" since he (and Annabeth) both disagree on her view of families having to be perfect, siding with Hephaestus on the matter instead.
    * Hephaestus: Hephaestus is grateful to Percy for having discovered who was using his forge under Mt. St. Helens, even though he caused an eruption that destroyed the forge and awakened Typhon(who had been imprisoned under the volcano), but also dispersed and/or killed the users. Historically, Hephaestus and Poseidon have close ties in the terms of the Cyclopes, who work for both of them.
    * Dionysus: (aka "Mr. D") Percy is primarily on Mr. D's bad side, even from the very second they met. Dionysus constantly antagonizes Percy (and all other demigods, for that matter)by never calling them by their real names, but he saved Percy's life in "The Titan's Curse". One of the other reasons he may dislike half-bloods is because of the way they treat mortals; he mentioned Theseus and Ariadne, Jason and Medea, and alluded to Hercules and Zoё Nightshade in "The Titan's Curse", mentioning how the former in all three cases used and later abandoned the latter. Percy doesn't much like Dionysus, either, because of the way he treats the campers. However, at the end of the "Battle of the Labyrinth", they had something like a (temporary) truce, when after one of Dionysus' sons died in the final battle, he voted that he believed Grover's news that Pan was dead, disbanded the council when they where at a tie, and cured Chris (a previously traitor half-blood and Clarisse's friend if not her crush) of the madness he got in the Labyrinth.
    * Artemis: Percy is on Artemis' good side since he helped find and save her in "The Titan's Curse". She even declared him a hero in the halls of Olympus itself and started calling him a man rather than a boy after he helped her defeat Atlas.
    * Hermes: Percy is on good terms with Hermes, who convinced him to go on a quest in "The Sea of Monsters" and gave him magic items to assist him in his journey. He also explained the relationship between gods and heroes to him.
    * Aphrodite: Aphrodite was intrigued by Percy's desire to save Annabeth. She expressed an interest in their relationship, meaning that she plans to meddle with it in some way. She also said she would make Percy's love life hard, just because she likes him.
    * Apollo: the sun god helped Percy twice in "The Titan's Curse" so that they could save Artemis, his sister. Being the god of prophecy, he also told Percy how important dreams could be.

    Weapons/Magical Items

    * Riptide/Anaklusmos - A magical pen that can transform into a sword. It returns to a sword form while the pen is uncapped. Anaklusmos has changed the shape of its disguised form over time and ownership to fit into mortal society. It will also return to Percy's pocket if he ever loses it. First used by Hercules. This blade cannot harm mortals though, as it is made of celestial bronze, which can only harm half-bloods, immortals, and monsters, but passes through humans like an illusion.
    * A wristwatch that can be turned into a shield. Forged by Tyson. It is shown that the shield is stronger than most weapons, for in The Sea of Monsters, Charles Beckendorf's sword shatters like glass on contact with it. Damaged in The Titan's Curse by Dr. Thorn (a manticore), although Tyson repairs it in the Battle of the Labyrinth. Lost when he threw it at Kampê at the entrance to the Labyrinth in Alcatraz.
*Nemean Lion's pelt - a spoil of war that turns into a bulletproof lion-fur jacket. Percy sacrifices it as a gift to Poseidon.
*Stygian ice whistle- given to him by Quintus/Daedalus. It is used to call Mrs. O'Leary, the hellhound, and will shatter when blown. Percy uses it when he is trapped by Luke, in Antaeus's arena.
    * A moonlace plant given to him by Calypso.
    * Mrs O'Leary, the hellhound, was placed under his care by Daedalus.
    * A sand dollar, given to him by his father Poseidon in The Battle of the Labyrinth at his 15th birthday, at the end of the book. Poseidon hints that it might be quite valuable. It is unknown if the sand dollar possesses any powers.
