Luke Castellan is the antagonist in Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series.

    Character's background

Luke is the son of Hermes and a mortal. He ran away from his mortal parent's home when he was around fourteen and met Annabeth, Thalia, and Grover Underwood. Together, they traveled to Camp Half-Blood. On their way, they were chased by a horde of monsters. As they were passing through New York, they came across a Cyclops who held them up so that the other monsters could catch up to them. Thalia sacrificed her life so that Luke and Annabeth could safely get into camp. He lived at Camp Half-Blood for about six years and leaves after the end of the first book. He is also revealed to be one of the key villains from the series. He also has the demon cruise ship, the "Princess Andromeda".

Luke betrayed The Olympians and started to help Kronos plotting the destructions of the Olympians since he believed that his father, Hermes has never truly loved him. However, in the second book, Hermes reveals to Percy that Luke is his pride and joy and wishes Percy could somehow influence him to be back to The Olympians' side. Luke often shows romantic feelings for Thalia. In the first book, he betrays and tells Percy this line, "The gods let her die! That's one of the many things they'll pay for." He was also very hesitant in getting her involved with Kronos in the third book.

In "The Battle of the Labyrinth", Luke's body becomes the vessel that harbors Kronos' essence. It is unknown if he is possessed voluntarily or forcibly, but it has been said by Kronos that Luke's body has been preparing for this moment.

    Love Life

It is implied that he has strong feelings for Thalia. Annabeth, it appears, has romantic feelings for him also, whom he sees only as a little sister. It is also stated in Annabeth's prophecy, "And lose a love to worse than death", and it points to Luke's body being taken over by Kronos, which reveals her love for him. But in "The Battle of the Labyrinth", Annabeth kisses Percy in Mount St. Helens, so it is as if she has mixed feelings for the both of them. In "The Titan's Curse", however, Percy asks Thalia to explain why she never became a Hunter, and she says it is because she would have had to leave Luke behind, which implies they either had a strong friendship, or she felt some romantic feelings toward him, while Luke feels for Thalia the same way. In "The Battle of the Labyrinth", however, Luke asked his monsters to spare Annabeth so he could speak to her.

    Weaknesses

It is said in the Battle of the Labyrinth that Luke had always feared Percy and was jealous of him in some way. This is said by Kronos when he rises out of the coffin. He also said Luke wanted power, and that he, (Kronos), could give him that. It is unsure if Kronos had manipulated him or not. Also, he has never been able to defeat Thalia.

    Power/Abilities

    * Like other half-bloods, Luke has ADHD, which is supposed to make half-bloods more aware in battles.
    * Luke seems to be a good strategist and manipulator.
    * Luke has been trained in hand-to-hand combat during his stays at Half Blood Camp.
    * Luke is an amazing fighter and swordsman.
    * Luke was head counseler of the Hermes Cabin
    * Luke's soul is now fused with Kronos', giving him inhumane abilities and the power of time magic.
    * Being a child of Hermes, Luke may have some abilites that involve traveling and theft.

    Weapons/Magical Items

    * Backbiter - A blade with one side of celestial bronze melded with tempered steel. Can damage both mortals and immortals. It is said that Backbiter is a foot longer than Anaklusmos and Percy sensed a tragedy in the making of Backbiter. In the fourth book, it is revealed that the metal used for Backbiter came from Kronos's sickle. It has recently been reforged into it's original form for its master's rising.
    * A pair of magical sneakers that can sprout wings when the owner says, "Maia", for Hermes's mother was Maia and therefore Maia is Luke's grandmother. The sneakers were given to him by his father Hermes, and bear a close resemblance to Hermes's own winged shoes. Luke cursed them into pulling the wearer of shoes into the pits of Tartarus. The shoes are now gone, after they slipped off of Grover and fell deep into Tartarus.
    * Kronos's Scythe- when Kronos is brought back to life in Luke's form, the telekhines gave him Kronos's scythe, which was reforged out of Backbiter, and no amount of celestial bronze could beat it. [Citation
