- SS Camorta
SS "Camorta" was a
steamship owned by theBritish India Steam Navigation Company which sunk in the Irrawaddy Delta on6 May 1902 with the loss of all 655 passengers and 82 crew. She was en route fromMadras ,India , toRangoon ,Burma , across theBay of Bengal , when she was caught in acyclone . All of her passengers and 73 of her crew were Indians. She was reported missing when she failed to arrive at Rangoon on13 May and the wreck was discovered in fifteenfathom s on4 June ; hermast s still stood six feet above the water. The disaster was the fourth worst loss of life in the wreck of a British-registered civilian vessel (she was registered inGlasgow ) in history after the RMS "Titanic", RMS "Lusitania" and RMS "Empress of Ireland". She was built in 1881.References
