The municipalities of Sweden ("kommun") are the local government entities of Sweden. The current 290 municipalities organized in 21 counties ("Län"). In 1971 the formal differences between city and rural areas were removed and all municipalities are now a uniform type with no local statutes or privileges of any kind. The municipalities vary greatly in size and population. Smaller and more densely populated municipalities are located around Stockholm and are part of Metropolitan Stockholm. Municipalities in the north have a few thousand residents, but in an area larger than entire counties in the south of the country.__TOC__
