Since prehistoric times the locale above Cammachmore Bay has been an area of human occupation with surviving monuments such as
Old Bourtreebush stone circle . There is also considerablemedieval history associated with this monument's position along the ancientCausey Mounth trackway . This olddrovers' road was constructed on high ground to make passable this only availablemedieval route fromcoast al points south fromStonehaven toAberdeen . This trackway specifically connected theRiver Dee crossing (where the presentBridge of Dee is situated) viaPortlethen Moss ,Muchalls Castle andStonehaven to the south.
