Privett station was an intermediate station on the Meon Valley line which ran from Alton to Fareham during the first half of the 20th century. Opened on 1 June 1903, its only minor claim to fame was that it caused "Privett Halt" in Gosport to be re-named [ [http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/stations/f/fort_gomer_halt/index.shtml RE-named to avoid confusion] ] . A particularly difficult line to construct(It cost the equivalent of 27 millionGBP [“The Meon Valley Railway” Stone, R.A : Cheltenham,Runpast Publishing, 1983 ISBN 978-1870754361] ), its most dramatic feature was the 1000 yard tunnel north of the village a few yards east of the Alton road [ “A History of the County of Hampshire: Volume 3 (1908)” Page,W(Ed) "Parishes: Privett" p 336] . The station was also the summit of the line, at 519 feet (158 m) above sea level. Never a busy station it was reduced from a two platform to one operation in 1921 and finally closed on 5 February 1955, although the goods services were retained [Stone(Ibid)] .
