railway station in the town of Alton, in the English county ofHampshire . The station is the terminus for two railway lines; the "Alton Line " which runs to Brookwood, and the "Mid Hants Watercress Railway ", which runs to Alresford.Services operate along the Alton Line to Brookwood and join the
South West Main Line towards London Waterloo which Alton is 75 km (46¾ miles) to the south west.As well as the two train lines, Alton is also a terminal for the "Rail-link" bus service which runs between the station and
Liphook railway station via the town ofBordon . Plans to create a railway line along this route have been mooted.Platforms
There are three platforms in use.
South West Trains use platforms one and two. Platform three is used by theMid Hants Watercress Railway .History
Opened by the
London and South Western Railway , it became part of the Southern Railway during the Grouping of 1923. The station then passed on to theSouthern Region of British Railways onnationalisation in 1948. When Sectorisation was introduced in the 1980's, the station was served byNetwork SouthEast until the Privatisation of British Railways.ervices
Monday to Saturdays there is generally a half-hourly service to London Waterloo with an hourly service on Sundays.
