The City Centre Core in Birmingham, England, is the historic heart of the city roughly comprising the area within the former Birmingham Inner Ring Road.[1]
Prior to the demolition and reconfiguration of lengths of the Inner Ring Road, the area was seen as the City Centre. Today, Birmingham City Centre is much larger, composed of 9 districts, and is defined as being the area within the Middle Ring Road.[2] Chamberlain Square, Old Square and Victoria Square are features within the Core as are Birmingham Town Hall, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Birmingham Central Library, Saint Phillips Cathedral, Methodist Central Hall, Birmingham, Victoria Law Courts and other Birmingham Law Courts. Major streets in the City Centre Core are, New street. Corporation Street, and Colmore Row. Old and new features are juxtaposed there.
Birmingham City Council is investing primarily outside the City Centre Core because a strong policy objective is to enlarge the City Centre. There is a great deal of investment in other parts of Birmingham City Centre.
