It was recorded in Japan in 1974 while Hancock was touring and first released on the Japanese CBS Sony label. Hancock performs "Maiden Voyage" and "Dolphin Dance" acoustically, while "Nobu" and "Cantaloupe Island" were performed on electric keyboards.
