History

Dana McNeil, a railroad worker began experimenting with early amateur radio by signing a station on with the call sign 9ZP in 1912. The calls at the time were only authorized for using a spark gap for morse code transmissions. On June 1, 1916, the station became the call sign 9CLS and voice transmissions began. In 1927, the station officially was awarded the calls KGFX and was licensed at 1180 kHz with a power of only 200 watts. The station operated from 6 AM to 6 PM. On November 11, 1928, the station changed frequencies to 580 kHz and in October of 1931 the frequency changed again to 630 kHz. In 1967 the station changed to its final location on the dial and the transmitting power became 10,000 watts. Two towers were constructed for the station, south of Fort Pierre. Two more towers were then constructed in 1976 allowing the station to operate 24 hours a day. The station celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2006.
