- Huntingtown High School
Huntingtown High School is located at 4125 North Solomons Island Road,
Huntingtown, Maryland (MD), 20639. Completed and opened in2004 , HHS is currently home to some (estimated) seventeen hundred students from grades 9 to 12. HHS is in Calvert County, and is part of theCalvert County Public Schools , (CCPS).taff
Mr. Rick Weber is the principal at Huntingtown High, assisted by Trey Sirman (9), Dave Taylor (10), Dan Brown (12), and Yovonda Kolo (11). Mrs. Voelker is the Librarian and Media Specialist, assisted by Mrs. Byrne. The teachers and other faculty offer a wide variety of academic, honors, and Advanced Placement courses.
Athletics
HHS hosts a variety of sports teams directed by Jason Harlow. Fall sports include football, boys' and girls' soccer, field hockey, cross country, golf, and volleyball. Winter sports include swimming, boys' and girls' basketball, indoor track, wrestling, and ice hockey. There are also cheer and dance teams for both the fall and winter. Spring sports include boys' and girls' lacrosse, softball, baseball, track and field, and tennis.
Football
For the first time in school history, the Huntingtown Varsity Football team made it's way into the playoffs in the 2007 season. They also boasted a freshman quarterback.
Volleyball
The Hurricanes Volleyball team has also been dominant. They have made it to the state semi-finals several times. Several players have gone on to play at the collegiate level.
Swim Team
Huntingtown's Boy's Swim Team recently won the 2008 SMAC and 4A/3A South Regional Titles.
Ice Hockey
Huntingtown established an ice hockey team in 2008. The team won the Southern Division Championship and made it to the Regional State Playoffs, but lost to Easton High School.
Softball
Huntingtown's softball team has won three state title since the school's inception, only losing in the 2008 season.
Track and Field
In the 2008 season, the boys' track and field team, coached by Valerie Harrington, ended the season with a the perfect record or 12-0. Boys Lacrosse
The boys lacrosse team has also been a powerhouse through SMAC, coming in second in 2008. The lacrosse team has sent many students to play collegiate lacrosse.Programs
Music
Huntingtown's Music Department is directed by Mr. Donald Naumann (Band), Mr. Daniel Boyer (Chorus), and Mrs. Sara Moran (String Orchestra). The department sends several students yearly to Maryland All-State music programs, as well as various other honors ensembles, and is regarded as one of the best in southern Maryland and the region. {see "Marching Band" below.)
Theatre
Huntingtown's Eye of the Storm Productions (EotSP), under the direction of Mr. Derek Anderson, has been recognized by the American Alliance for High School Theatre as one of the top 35 high school theatre programs in the nation. The company produces a fall play and spring musical, in addition to "Black Box" shows throughout the year. Several EotSP students participate in both Maryland State and National Theatre Festivals, garnering numerous awards since the school's opening.
Journalism
The school's journalism program, under the tutelage of Ms. Sutton, Mrs. White and Ms. Turner, produce a news-magazine, yearbook, and news broadcast. The yearbook staff work on the yearbook year round and issue one copy per year along with a spring supplement. The school's Broadcasting program is called H-TV and is streaming all school TV at 2:07 every day.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Marching Band
The HHS Marching Hurricanes, directed by Mr. Donald Naumann, is composed of students playing a wide range wind and percussion instruments as well as many Guard members. The Marching Hurricanes, composed of 63 instrumentalists and guard members at the time, earned second place in the 2007-2008 Tournament of Bands Atlantic Coast Championship (ACC).
Library/Media Center
A favorite place of students to study, work, and relax with a good book is the library, which is a quieter alternative to the cafeteria or noisy classrooms. Featuring a full working library, two computer labs, and lots of state-of-the-art multimedia equipment, the HHS Library / Media Center which is run by Media Specialist Christine Voelker and her assistant D. Byrnes provides a foundation for many of the school's services and programs.
Campus
The HHS campus features, aside from its building and traffic pattern, a full working football field, a baseball field, and a track field. The large, 3-story building is surrounded by these and two parking lots exiting onto route
