Quezaltepec

The Quezaltepec or “Mountain of Quetzals” is a volcano located between the departments of San Salvador and La Libertad in El Salvador. Contemplated from San Salvador, it presents two well differentiated masses, separated by a narrow and deep throat. The highest and with a pyramidal form, at 1959 m. of height, is known as “El Picacho”, formerly called “Cerro Grande”. The other mass, low and voluminous is called “El boquerón” at 1893 m high.

In this same direction, the volcanic complex presents the crater of “La Joya y la Laguna”. Observing the mass from the “Sitio del Niño”, beside the precipitate prominences, is the sharp peak of “El jabalí”. The volcano of San Salvador made its last eruption accompanied of highly destructive earthquakes, on June 17 1917. In that occasion, it threw a shot of lava from the craters of “El Pinar” and “Las Granadillas”, which were from 6 to 7Km. long.
