Norwin Middle School

Norwin Middle School

Norwin Middle School, the only middle school of Norwin School District, is located in North Huntingdon Township, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Norwin Middle School, more commonly known as NMS, was once called Norwin Middle School West. There were once two middle schools in Norwin, East and West; West located in North Huntingdon, and East located in Irwin. The school is located on Norwin Campus, which is made up of Norwin High School, Norwin Middle School, Hillcrest Intermediate School, and Hahntown Elementary School. "NMS" has a legendary location of being perched on a steep hillside overlooking Norwin Stadium and the high school.

Historical Correction

To be 100% accurate, there were once THREE Junior High Schools in the Norwin School District: 6th Street School in Irwin, which lodged most or all district 7th graders; Junior High East, which housed primarily 8th & 9th, but sometimes also a small percentage of the 7th graders in the Eastern half of the school district in the building that is now the Queen of Angels School; and Junior High West, which housed 8th & 9th graders in the Western half of the school district, located in what is now the Norwin Middle School building, on the hill above the high school.

The 6th Street School closed in 1987, with the Norwin Class of 92 being the last group to experience this school, which was once the Irwin High School prior to the merger of Irwin and North Huntingdon schools to form Norwin. After that time, the grade 7-9 students attended either East or West, depending upon where the student lived.

In 1993, the school district transitioned from the Junior High (7-9) system to the Middle School (6-8) system and Freshmen were at the high school for the first time in 1994, making the Class of 1999 only spend 2 years in the middle schools.
