The Victorian Railways Y class diesel electric locomotive is a small branch line and shunting unit built by Clyde Engineering (now EDI Rail). Three separate orders were delivered. The first reused bogies and traction motors from the scrapped Swing Door Electric Multiple Unit suburban trains.
After closure of branch lines across the state and the end of short pick-up goods trains, use of the class dropped.[cite book]
