Trends (journals)

"Trends" is a series of scientific journals owned by Elsevier that publish review articles in a range of areas of biology.

The "Trends" series was founded in 1976 with "Trends in Biochemical Sciences" (TIBS), rapidly followed by "Trends in Neurosciences" (TINS), "Trends in Pharmacological Sciences" (TIPS) and "Immunology Today". Swift expansion of the formula in the 1980s and 1990s included less successful non-biological titles, "Trends in Food Science and Technology" and "Trends in Polymer Science", which were later discontinued or removed from the series.

"Immunology Today", "Parasitology Today" and "Molecular Medicine Today" changed their names to "Trends in..." in 2001. "Drug Discovery Today" was spun off as an independent brand.

Originally published in Cambridge, UK, the "Trends" editorial office moved to London in the mid-1990s, after Elsevier acquired Pergamon Press.

Individual journals

"Trends in Plant Science"

"Trends in Plant Science" ("PLANTS"; ISSN 1360-1385) is a monthly review journal aimed at those working in plant science or in related specialist areas and provides instant overview of current thinking for students, academic, industrial and applied scientists who want to keep up with the latest developments in plant science.

"PLANTS" was launched on the back of a new momentum in plant science research that has carried on into the 21st century – the genome sequencing of model organisms (i.e. "Arabidopsis thaliana"), which initiated a better understanding of fundamental processes in plants and other organisms. "PLANTS" rapidly gained popularity and remains among the most highly cited journals within plant science. The format of "PLANTS" consists of two main article types: mini-review style Reviews, and Opinion articles, which are the same length as the Reviews, but with greater scope for hypothesis and personal perspective. Both article types are written in an accessible style by leading researchers, and aim to cover advances in understanding and emerging themes within plant science. Shorter news-style Research Focus articles are also occasionally included.

Topics covered include: Plant growth and development; Developmental genetics and evolution; Genome studies and molecular genetics; Molecular cell biology; Biotechnology; Cell signalling and gene regulation; Physiology and metabolism; Nutrition; Water relations and gas exchange; Biotic interactions and symbiosis; Pathology and stress physiology; Population genetics and ecology.
