1977 VFL Grand Final

1977 VFL Grand Final

The 1977 VFL Grand Final took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground over two weekends in 1977 between VFL clubs North Melbourne and Collingwood.

The first was played on September 24 but the match was drawn resulting in a replay on October 1. It was just the second grand final in history to be drawn, the other was in 1948. Collingwood lead by 27 points at three quarter time, helped by North Melbourne's inaccuracy which saw them kick 13 successive behinds at one point. Arnold Briedis had a match to forget, kicking 0-7 for the match. In the dying minutes a couple of goals to Phil Baker gave North the lead but they couldn't hold on, Ross Dunne marked directly in front for Collingwood and goaled with just 40 seconds remaining to level the scores.

The replay was attended by 98,366 people and North Melbourne were victors by 27 points, becoming premiers for just the second time in the club's history. Both teams returned a week later for the replay and this time North were in front throughout, Briedis managing to turn things around and kick five goals.
