Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp (1990)Horse (Equus ferus caballus) Last updated on January 19, 2010 Dayjur (foaled 6 February 1987) was an American-bred racehorse who was trained by Dick Hern in the United Kingdom. He was beaten only four times out of eleven starts and of those, one was because he did not stay the trip, and another in the most freakish circumstances. During his final race, the 1990 Breeders' Cup Sprint at Belmont Park, Dayjur did well to overcome a difficult draw, and looked set for victory, only to attempt to jump the shadow of the grandstand near the line which allowed Safely Kept to beat him by a neck. Before that, he had carried almost all before him as a three-year-old, once his best distance and running style were sorted out, and he blazed to victory in the Temple Stakes, the Nunthorpe Stakes, the Ladbroke Sprint Cup and the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp before he went to Belmont.
He retired to the Shadwell Racing farm in Kentucky of his owner Sheikh Hamdan Al-Maktoum, from where he has sired many fast horses like Tipsy Creek, Hawriyah, Hayil and Millstream. On January 18, 2009 it was announced that Dayjur had been pensioned. [1]
