Waverly is a
town in Franklin County,New York ,United States . The population was 1,118 at the 2000 census.The Town of Waverly is on the west border of the county, southwest of the Village of Malone.
History
The Town of Waverly was formed in 1880 from part of the Town of Dickinson. Half its area was lost to the Town of Tupper Lake (then called the "Town of Altamont") in 1890. The St. Regis Falls area was a major lumber producer, and the
Northern Adirondack Railroad was built from Moira, connecting the area to theOgdensburgh and Lake Champlain Railroad .Residents of note

United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 126.4square mile s (327.4km² ), of which, 125.2 square miles (324.4 km²) of it is land and 1.2 square miles (3.0 km²) of it (0.92%) is water.The west town line is the border of St. Lawrence County,
New York . The town is within theAdirondack Park . TheSt. Regis River flows through the north part of the town.New York State Route 458 is an east-west highway through the north part of the town.Waverly is inside the

As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,118 people, 449 households, and 294 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 8.9 people per square mile (3.4/km²). There were 854 housing units at an average density of 6.8/sq mi (2.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.19% White, 0.27% Native American, and 0.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.27% of the population.There were 449 households out of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the town the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 101.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $26,591, and the median income for a family was $31,875. Males had a median income of $29,688 versus $18,750 for females. The
per capita income for the town was $14,023. About 12.2% of families and 15.6% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 21.7% of those under age 18 and 21.6% of those age 65 or over.Communities and locations in Waverly
*Gile -- A hamlet in the north part of the town and south of St. Regis Falls and south of NY-458.
*St. Regis Falls -- A hamlet in the northern part of the town on NY-458 at the junction of County Roads 5 and 14. It was a village, incorporated in 1855, but later abandoned that status. The community is centered around the St. Regis River.References
