- Landmark Trust
The Landmark Trust is a British building conservation charity, founded in 1965 by Sir John and Lady Smith, that rescues buildings of historic interest or architectural merit and then gives them a new life by making them available for holiday rental. The Trust's headquarters is at
Shottesbrooke inBerkshire .Those who stay in "Landmarks" provide a continuing source of funds to support restoration costs and building maintenance. The trust currently (in 2008) has 186 properties, ranging from grand to modest in scale. Landmark sites include forts, farmhouses, manor houses, mills, cottages, castles, gatehouses, follies and towers. They represent historic periods from medieval to 20th century. Properties may be rented by the week or for three- or four-day stays throughout the year.
Most trust properties are scattered throughout
England ,Scotland andWales . Some are onLundy Island off the coast of northDevon , operated under lease from the National Trust. In addition, there are four Landmark sites inItaly , including an apartment overlooking theSpanish Steps inRome , directly above the lodging where poetJohn Keats died. Four properties are in theUnited States --all inVermont --one of which, Naulakha, was the home ofRudyard Kipling in the 1890s. The American sites are owned by an independent sister charity Landmark Trust USA.The following lists aim to be complete and illustrate both the variety of structures and geographical spread of the trust.
