The most successful organization at GCHS is the school band, known as the "Band of Gold". Having existed for over 80 years, it is one of the oldest school bands in the state. The "Band of Gold" has placed in the Tennessee State AA marching band competition finals 12 times, more than any other band in the state, and has won 3 state titles-more than any other GCHS athletic/student activity and 2nd all time in the state in number of title championships. They are also a 2-caption member of the State AA Band Hall of Fame. The band has also performed in the Tennessee State Music Educators State Concert Festival, an exclusive, invitation only performance. Students from the band routinely audition and place in district and state level concert and jazz bands and a vast majority of graduating seniors audition and receive music scholarships from major universities, to include The University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt University, Florida State University and Indiana University, among others. The Band also has a proud military band tradition, having placed members in Army and Navy bands, both active and reserve/National Guard. The current directors are Mr. Jason Gospodarek (BM, Univ. of Tennessee, MEd., Tennessee St. Univ.) and Mr. Brandon Grieves (BS, Cumberland University). Mr. Gospodarek is also a 15 year veteran of the US Army Band program, having served at the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division Band at Ft. Campbell, KY and the 129th Army Band of the Tennessee Army National Guard.
