Northwood High School is a public high school located in Saltville, Virginia. The school serves about 300 students in grades 9 to 12 in the Smyth County Public Schools system. The school operates on a 4x4 block schedule and has many goals in place to improve the achievement of students on Virginia Standards of Learning exams.[3]

The school opened in 1957 as R. B. Worthy High School. In 1987, Northwood High School was formed when R. B. Worthy and Rich Valley High Schools were consolidated due to declining enrollment.[4] The school is fed by Northwood Middle School, which, in turn, is fed by Saltville Elementary School and Rich Valley Elementary School.

Northwood's mascot is the black panther, and they are known as The Panthers.

Arts

Band

The band is known as the Panther Pride Marching band, and consists of approximately 40 members as of 2010. It is under the direction of Jamie Davidson.

Teachers

Tom Carter

Tom Carter has been teaching at Northwood for 11 years. Previously, he taught one semester at Abingdon High School. He has graduated from a number of colleges, including Virginia Highlands in 1992, Emory and Henry College in 1999, UVA in 2007, and the University of Phoenix in 2008. He is currently pursuing his doctorate degree at the American Public University of Counciling.

Jamie Wayne Davidson

After graduating from Mars Hill College in 1999, Jamie Wayne Davidson began his teaching career as a band director at St. Paul High School in St. Paul, Virginia in the year 1999. After teaching there for 6 years, he became band director of Northwood High School in 2005. Jamie Davidson, known as Mr. D by his students, is a local pastor and trombonist.

Anna Leigh DeBord

Anna Leigh DeBord has been teaching Spanish and World History at Northwood since the school's inception. Previously, she worked at one of Northwood's parent school's, Rich Valley High School. She currently coaches Northwood's Social Studies SWAC team. She graduated from Emory and Henry College.

Leola Griffin

Leola Griffin has been teaching at Northwood for 8 years. Northwood was the first school she worked at. She currently coaches Northwood's Math SWAC team. She graduated from Emory and Henry College in 1987.

Chuck Hicks

Chuck Hicks has been teaching at Northwood since the school's inception in 1987. Previously, he taught at one of Northwood's parent schools, Rich Valley High School. He graduated from Emory and Henry College in 1982. And his famous daily phrase "It's a great day!" always lifts the spirits of the students.

Gary Phillips

Gary Phillips has been working at Northwood for 3 years. Before his current tenure at Northwood, he taught at Marion Senior High School in Marion, Virginia. Before working at Marion, Mr. Phillips worked at Northwood and its parent school, R.B. Worthy High School as a band director. He graduated from Elon College in 1977.

Randy Sturgill

Randy Sturgill has been working at Northwood for 6 years. Previously, he worked at Cocke County High School in Newport, Tennessee. He graduated from Carson-Newman College in 1989.
