Buchanan, Virginia . It serves the northern part of Botetourt County, including the towns of Buchanan, Eagle Rock, Fincastle, and Springwood. James River was founded in 1959 with the consolidation of the Buchanan, Eagle Rock, and Fincastle high schools.Recently, renovations to the school were completed. A new athletic center, media lab, administrative offices, and science labs were created. James River's student body president is Corey Morris with the vice president being Greer Sullivan.

The Knights have captured three State Championships in Women's Softball. They have been runners-up in Men's Basketball, Men's Outdoor Track, and Golf. Their Men's basketball program finished a 25-1 season in the Virginia State Semi-finals in 2007. They captured the Pioneer District Regular Season and Tournament Championships as well as the Region C Championship. Their team was led by two seniors: First team All-State and Player of the Year in Region C, Ryan Firebaugh, and All District guard Aaron Humphries.Volleyball won All district for the 2007-2008 Year.
Drama
JRHS advanced to the VA State Theatre Competition in Charlottesville on December 3, 2007. The "Knightly" players won second in the Region C Theatre Competition earlier in November of 2007.
Band
With the addition of band director Dale Hedrick in 2001, JRHS has had a very successful Competition Marching Band, winning numerous awards and almost doubling its size. In 2006 Dale Hedrick left James River and the band received its new band director, William Divers. In 2008, however, James River came short in the regional playoffs against Gate City, VA (Virginia High School) on their way to states at VCU.
