According to the
United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 10.8square mile s (28.0km² ), of which, 10.6 square miles (27.4 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²) of it (2.31%) is water.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 13,309 people, 3,355 households, and 2,969 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 1,260.6 people per square mile (486.6/km²). There were 3,617 housing units at an average density of 342.6/sq mi (132.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 69.80% White, 0.53% African American, 0.81% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 26.02% from other races, and 2.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 96.44% of the population.There were 3,355 households out of which 55.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.0% were married couples living together, 20.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 11.5% were non-families. 9.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.95 and the average family size was 4.24.
In the city the population was spread out with 37.5% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 16.6% from 45 to 64, and 7.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $20,164, and the median income for a family was $21,255. Males had a median income of $17,838 versus $15,129 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $6,576. About 36.3% of families and 39.0% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 46.2% of those under age 18 and 34.6% of those age 65 or over.References
