Commercial activity ranges from retail and wholesale activity (broadly along two lines - Showrooms and Shop Culture) and manufacturing. Karol Bagh also has several low and medium budget hotelsas well as residential areas. The Karol Bagh market is mainly known for is jewelery and apparel. It has a plethora of shops specializing in clothes. The area between Gurudwara Road and Ajmal Khan Road, at the Pusa Road end, specialises in car accessories. The area was primarily residential with a large
Muslim population until the exodus of many Muslims toPakistan and an influx of refugees fromWest Punjab after Partition in 1947 [cite book |title=Neighbourhood and Social Networks In Urban India |last=Singh |first=Andrea |year=1976 |publisher=Marwah Publications |pages=67] , many of whom were traders.
