Bunbury began his professional playing career with the
Hamilton Steelers (1987-90),Toronto Blizzard andMontreal Supra of the (former) Canadian Soccer League. He was briefly a reserve at English club West Ham United, where he made six first team appearances in all competitions.Bunbury moved to
Marítimo in 1993 where he established himself over six seasons as one of the most well-known foreign goal scorers of theSuperLiga during the 1990s, affectionately known as "Alex" by the home fans. Bunbury won the Foreign Player of the Year award in Portugal after the 1994-1995 season.
