California Center for Innovative Transportation

The California Center for Innovative Transportation (CCIT) is a research organization at the University of California, Berkeley Institute of Transportation Studies. CCIT's mission is to deploy the most current transportation research through partnerships with public organizations such as Caltrans, as well as private organizations whose products or services serve the transportation sector.

Successfully deployed projects include:
*software developed to enable the display of travel time messages on freeway signs in the San Francisco Bay Area.
*corridor studies that rely on continuous, comprehensive traffic data collection and micro-simulation models to analyze the potential effects on both capital projects and intelleigent transportation systems strategies.
*a collaboration that involved the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA), which operates passenger trains between Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area, to test and demonstrate on-board wireless internet access. CCJPA is now issuing a Request for Proposal as a result of the trial.

CCIT was formed in 2001 as a group within California Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways (PATH), another UC Berkeley transportation research center; in 2003 they became an independent center, with a focus on accelerating the implementation of research findings and technical solutions that improve the safety and efficiency of California's surface transportation.

CCIT was formed by Hamed Benouar, a former Caltrans executive who is also a former California State Chief Traffic Engineer. The current CCIT Director is Thomas West, also a former Caltrans executive.
