capital of theŠalčininkai district municipality . Šalčininkai feature a multi-ethnic population ofPoles ,Lithuanians ,Belarusians ,Russians andRoma people . The city's coat of arms, designed by Arvydas Každailis, shows threehazelnuts symbolizing solidarity of the population. The region has one of the major Polish communities of Lithuania. Olympic ChampionWładysław Kozakiewicz was born in Šalčininkai. In June 2003 town twinning agreement between Šalčininkai andŁowicz (Poland ) andŻnin (Poland ) was signed.
