Football career
Martelinho represented, as a footballer, F.C. Marco, Boavista FC, C.D. Aves, Portonovo Sociedad Deportiva (Spain, amateurs, two spells) and F.C. Penafiel. He was instrumental in Boavista's only national league conquest in the club's history, in 2000–01: even though he did not score in 30 games, he provided several assists to Brazilian Elpídio Silva, who ranked amongst the competition's top scorers.
In the 2009 summer, Martelinho returned to his very first youth club C.D. Feirense, managing precisely the junior sides.
