Minnesota Golden Gophers football under William H. Spaulding

The Minnesota Golden Gophers were coached by William H. Spaulding for three seasons from 1922 to 1924.[1] In those three seasons, the Gophers won 11 games, lost seven and tied four.[1] In the Big Ten, they won five games, lost six and tied three.[2] Ray Ecklund End and Earl Martineau were named All-Americans under Coach Spaulding.[3] Four players were named All-Big Ten first team.[4]

The 1922 season was the Golden Gophers' first under head coach William H. Spaulding.[2] The Golden Gophers won two games, lost six and tied one.[2]

Halfback Earl Martineau was named All-Big Ten first team.[4]

The 1923 season was the Golden Gophers' second under head coach William H. Spaulding.[2] The Golden Gophers won five games, lost one and tied one.[2] It was the final season in the Northrop Field.[5]

End Ray Ecklund and halfback Earl Martineau were named All-American by the Associated Press. Martineau was also named an All-American by Walter Camp Football Foundation and Look Magazine.[3] Ecklund was named All-Big Ten first team.[4].

The Jack Trice incident occurred during the season against Iowa State as well.

The 1924 season was the Golden Gophers' third under head coach William H. Spaulding.[2] The Golden Gophers won three games, lost two and tied two.[2] It was the first season in Memorial Stadium.[5] Total attendance for the season was 139,772, which averaged to 23,297.[6] The season high for attendance was against Illinois.[6]

Guard George Abramson and tackle Ted Cox were named All-Big Ten first team.[4]
