Central City is a city in Merrick County, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Grand Island, Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,998 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Merrick CountyGR|6.

Geography

Central City is located at coor dms|41|6|50|N|98|0|9|W (41.113820, -98.002483)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,998 people, 1,212 households, and 812 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,507.1 people per square mile (581.7/km²). There were 1,352 housing units at an average density of 679.6/sq mi (262.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.20% White, 0.40% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.30% of the population.

There were 1,212 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $50,000 and the median income for a family was $39,118. Males had a median income of $27,250 versus $19,750 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,943. About 6.3% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 11.9% of those age 65 or over.
