Perinucleolar Compartment

Perinucleolar Compartment

The Perinucleolar Compartment (PNC) is a region of the nucleolus which is inside the nucleus of a cell. The PNC contains large amounts of the hnRNP called hnRNP 1. Many RNA binding proteins are highly enriched in this compartment which requires RNA to maintain its integrity. [Ghetti, A., Pinol-Roma, S., Michael, W.M., Morandi, C. and Dreyfuss G., hnRNP I, the polypyrimidine tract-binding protein: distinct nuclear localization and association with hnRNAs, Nucl. Acids Res., 20,14,3671-3678,1992,1641332]

The perinucleolar Compartment (PNC) is a subnuclear structure associated with, but structurally distinct from, the nucleolus. The PNC contains large amounts of the hnRNP called hnRNP 1 (PTB). Many RNA binding proteins as well as RNA polymerase III transcripts are highly enriched in this compartment. PTB and pol III transcripts are required for the integrity of the PNC. [1]
