Leigh is a village in Colfax County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 442 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Leigh is located at coor dms|41|42|16|N|97|14|15|W|city (41.704544, -97.237586)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), of which, 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²) of it is land and 1.64% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 442 people, 190 households, and 118 families residing in the village. The population density was 732.3 people per square mile (284.4/km²). There were 212 housing units at an average density of 351.3/sq mi (136.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.55% White, and 0.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.81% of the population.

There were 190 households out of which 30.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% were married couples living together, 5.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.4% were non-families. 36.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 25.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the village the population was spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 25.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $31,458, and the median income for a family was $40,481. Males had a median income of $31,563 versus $17,143 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,423. About 4.5% of families and 6.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.9% of those under age 18 and 8.5% of those age 65 or over.
