The General Defense Command was established on
1941-07-05 under the direct command of the Emperor via theImperial General Headquarters . For administrative, recruiting and accounting purposes, Japan was divided into six army districts, each with agarrison force equivalent to an army corps:*
Eastern District Army - HQ inTokyo and responsible for theKantō region and northernHonshū
*Western District Army - HQ in Fukuoka and responsible for southwestern Honshū,Shikoku and theRyukyu Islands .
*Northern District Army - HQ inSapporo and responsible forHokkaidō andKarafuto .
*Central District Army - HQ inOsaka and responsible for central Honshū.
*Chosen Army - HQ inKeijo and responsible forKorea
*Taiwan Army - HQ inTaihoku and responsible forTaiwan .The General Defense Command was also responsible for
anti-aircraft defenses, and for organizingcivil defense training.On
1945-04-08 , in preparation forOperation Downfall (or nihongo|Operation Ketsugō|決号作戦|Ketsugō sakusen in Japanese terminology), the General Defense Command was dissolved, and its duties assumed by the new First General Army and Second General Army.List of Commanders
