According to the
United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 1.4square mile s (3.7km² ), all of it land.Glasgow was founded in 1887 as a railroad town created by
James J. Hill . Hill was responsible for creating many communities with the railroad along the Hi-Line. Glasgow became popular during the 1930s because President FDR requested thatFort Peck Dam be constructed and this was a huge form of employment for the Glasgow area. In the 1960s the population flourished up to 12,000 because ofGlasgow Air Force Base (SAC), used during theVietnam War and the earlier part of the 'Cold War '. After the de-activation and closure of the base in 1969, Glasgow's population dwindled.The town overlooks the Milk River Valley.
Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 3,253 people, 1,395 households, and 852 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 2,310.3 people per square mile (890.8/km²). There were 1,609 housing units at an average density of 1,142.7/sq mi (440.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.91% White, 0.12% African American, 3.50% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.31% from other races, and 1.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.08% of the population.There were 1,395 households out of which 27.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% were non-families. 34.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.87.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 21.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 88.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,491, and the median income for a family was $42,847. Males had a median income of $29,762 versus $16,496 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $16,246. About 4.9% of families and 9.0% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 18.1% of those age 65 or over.Notable natives and residents
