Hingham is a town in Hill County, Montana, United States. The population was 157 at the 2000 census.

History

Hingham is a small agricultural community founded along the Great Northern Railroad. The first U.S. Postmaster was appointed to Hingham on February 11, 1910 and the town was incorporated in 1917. In its hayday much of the businesses were centered around the town park, hence the nickname "The Town on the Square". A landmark of Hingham is the water tower built in 1948 it can be seen miles before reaching town. Hingham along with many eastern Montana towns is losing population do the drought and lack of economic development. The town is served by North Star Schools which is a consolidation of Rudyard, Hingham, Gildford and Kremlin schools.

Hingham is located at coor dms|48|33|20|N|110|25|23|W|city (48.555641, -110.422951)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.4 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 157 people, 65 households, and 38 families residing in the town. The population density was 930.0 people per square mile (356.6/km²). There were 87 housing units at an average density of 515.4/sq mi (197.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.82% White, 1.91% Native American, and 1.27% from two or more races.

There were 65 households out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% were married couples living together, 1.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.5% were non-families. 32.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.21.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $38,333, and the median income for a family was $45,417. Males had a median income of $32,000 versus $20,625 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,525. About 9.1% of families and 10.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.4% of those under the age of eighteen and none of those sixty five or over.
