Bernie is a city in Stoddard County, Missouri, United States. The population was recorded as 2,031 in 2006.

Geography

Bernie is located at coor dms|36|40|15|N|89|58|10|W|city (36.670876, -89.969403)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2006, there were 2,031 people, 782 households, and 510 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,424.3 people per square mile (548.9/km²). There were 849 housing units at an average density of 680.5/sq mi (262.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 92.60% White, 3.21% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.23% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.23% of the population.

There were 842 households out of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were married couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 82.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $24,085, and the median income for a family was $30,847. Males had a median income of $24,922 versus $16,196 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,096. About 15.8% of families and 26.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.1% of those under age 18 and 28.3% of those age 65 or over.
