He twice won the gold medal in the Light welterweight division (<63.5 kg) at the Summer Olympics in 1964 and 1968.[1] He also twice won the gold medal at the European Amateur Championships in 1963 and 1965, and he won the silver medal in 1967.[2] Following his boxing career, he became an actor in Polish movies. In 1976 he appeared in the film Przepraszam, czy tu biją? directed by Marek Piwowski.[3]
Kulej was the winner of the Aleksander Reksza Boxing Award 1995.[4]
He has subsequently become a politician and is a member of the Social Democracy of Poland. He became a member of the Polish parliament (the Sejm) representing Warsaw in May 2001. He is currently a boxing commentator for Polish TV station Polsat Sport.
