Arkoe is a village in Nodaway County, Missouri, United States. The population was 58 at the 2000 census, at which time it was a town.

Geography

Arkoe is located at coor dms|40|15|33|N|94|49|39|W|city (40.259248, -94.827502)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.1 square miles (0.4 km²), all of it land.

Origin of name

Arkoe was founded in 1874 by Dr. P. H. Talbot. He built his home called "The House of the Seven Gables" after the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel of the same name, overlooking the One Hundred and Two River. In the novel "Peter Wilkins and the Flying Indians", by Robert Paltock, these fictional flying Indians take off and land on suitable stretches of rivers called 'arkoes'. The view of the river from the library windows of his home is said to have reminded Dr. Talbot of one of these 'arkoes'.

Talbot was murdered in 1880 and both of his sons were hanged. They are buried next to their father in Arkoe and their tombstone reads "We died innocent."

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 58 people, 24 households, and 13 families residing in the town. The population density was 425.4 people per square mile (160.0/km²). There were 24 housing units at an average density of 176.0/sq mi (66.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.55% White, and 3.45% from two or more races.

There were 24 households out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.8% were married couples living together, 4.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.7% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.21.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 34.5% from 25 to 44, 17.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 152.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 147.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $40,000, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,725. There were 14.3% of families and 14.3% of the population living below the poverty line, including 23.5% of under eighteens and none of those over 64.
