Newton Emerson is a political commentator and satirist in Northern Ireland. He describes himself as a 'liberal Unionist'.[1] Despite this, he writes in two Nationalist-leaning newspapers, the Irish edition of the Daily Mirror, and The Irish News.[2] He also contributes to The Irish Times.
He first came to prominence as writer of the "Portadown News" website, similar to American publication, "The Onion". After being 'outed' by the Andersonstown News, he was forced to leave his job at a computer company,[1] but maintained the website until 2005.[3]
Emerson has been accused of slander by the chairman of Féile an Phobail, Danny Morrison who regarded his comments as being sectarian and snobbish in a published letter to The Irish Times which Emerson wrote for.[4]
