-
Maurice J. "Sully" Sullivan (1909 – 1998) an immigrant from Ireland who moved to Hawaii was the co-founder, with See Goo Lau, of Foodland Super Markets, the only locally-owned supermarket chain in Hawaii.[1][2] The first store opened on 6 May 1948 in Honolulu, Hawaii.[3] By 2007, Foodland stores could be found on each of the four largest Hawaiian Islands.[2][4] At one time, Forbes Magazine rated Sullivan among the country's 400 wealthiest men with a net worth of approximately $150 million.[1] Sullivan was succeeded by his daughter, Jenai S. Wall, as President of Foodland in 1995 and CEO in 1998, the year of his death.[2][3]
In September, 2010, the American FBI, in response to a congressional inquiry lodged by Sen.Lindsey Graham (R-SC), released information that Sullivan was suspected of being a German spy in Hawaii, and was put under surveillance for over two years. According to the dossier, Sullivan was fed false information about rare earth shipments to the USSR, as well as Allied troop movements in North Africa and Italy.
