Webb City is a city in Jasper County, Missouri, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Webb City is located at coor dms|37|8|40|N|94|28|9|W|city (37.144458, -94.469249)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.4 square miles (19.3 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 9,812 people, 3,808 households, and 2,600 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,318.0 people per square mile (509.2/km²). There were 4,108 housing units at an average density of 551.8/sq mi (213.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.09% White, 0.54% African American, 1.32% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 1.14% from other races, and 2.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.50% of the population.

There were 3,808 households out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% were married couples living together, 14.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.09.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 17.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,849, and the median income for a family was $35,219. Males had a median income of $27,882 versus $18,655 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,589. About 13.1% of families and 15.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 11.7% of those age 65 or over.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s Webb City was the home of the world's largest and most productive lead and zinc mining field.

In 2000 the Webb City Cardinals, the high school football team won the state championship playing the season nearly undefeated.
